Maplesoft, the leading provider of high-performance mathematical software tools celebrated recently the 25th anniversary of its foundation. In 2006 Maple played an important role in the proof for the the existence of the Gömböc, the paper cites Maple several times. In commemoration of the company’s roots in the University of Waterloo, Maplesoft’s CEO Jim Cooper presented the University with a Gömböc that has the unique serial number 1988, marking the year of the company’s incorporation.
The University of Waterloo gained worldwide recognition as the Noble Prize for physics was awarded in 2018 to Professor Donna Strickland as the third woman in the history of the prize. The University decided to put Gömböc 1988 on permanent exhibit in a showcase next to the Office of the President, located in Ira G. Needles Hall.
